I earned my first camera by selling greeting cards from an ad in the back of Boy's Life Magazine while a Cub Scout. After working for weekly and then daily newspapers as a photographer, did undergraduate work in Imaging Sciences at Rochester Inst. of Technology and graduate work in Optical Sciences at the Univ. of Arizona. For a decade worked as a Photo-Optical Engineer on projects for NASA, the U.S. Air Force, the microelectronics and micrographics industries. Moved into publishing in a sales role for computer publications eventually becoming publisher of several print and online publications, including Jamboree Today, the daily news publication at the 2013 Nat'l Scout Jamboree. While managing the website I built for my Scout district, started making portraits of new Eagle Scouts in 2007. In order to improve the quality of the Eagle Portraits I joined PPA (Professional Photographers of America), Dallas PPA, and Texas PPA. This lead to PPA awarding me a Master of Photography degree in 2022 and an invitation to join the American Society of Photographers. Only PPA Master Photographers are invited to join ASP, whose membership is about 2% of PPA members.
Earned a BSA Wood Badge in 2002.
BSA Circle Ten Council awarded me a Silver Beaver in 2011.
My objective in making portraits of Eagle Scouts is to produce a portrait that is not merely a photo of an Eagle Scout but is also a portrait of the Scout's inner self, one in which every family member recognizes their unique loved one ... and will proudly hang on not only the parents' wall but that the Scout's children and grandchildren wall as well. And as I've said to many parents, we want to make a portrait that in 30 or 40 years the Scout will use in their promotional material as they are running for the presidency. It aims to be a portrait that not only exudes the intelligence, confidence, and enthusiasm of the Scout but also the maturity at a young age that will lead to a future great leader.
