Master Artist and Photographer Russell Lloyd Jensen has always centered his artistic vision on capturing the inner and outer beauty of people and their stories. He has built a passionate career, running a successful studio in western South Dakota with his wife Dr. Paula Jensen and their three children. Along the way, they have formed lifelong friendships and deep connections within their community through their shared love and commitment to photography.
Russell's artistic journey began as a student exploring various fine art mediums, including painting, drawing, ceramic & glass sculpture, printmaking, and eventually finding a love for the photographic arts. For over three decades, he has refined his craft, starting with developing his first roll of black-and-white film in the darkroom to creating captivating images in today’s digital world. His portrait and illustrative photography has earned national acclaim, blending technical mastery with artistic flair and emotional depth that resonates with viewers.
Russell Jensen is also one of the Black Hills region's highest nationally recognized and award winning portrait photographers. He is a proud member of the PPA and in 2016 was awarded the Master of Photography degree through his achievements, advanced education, and service to the industry. That same year he was also awarded the SD Photographer of the Year Award. His work has won numerous gold and silver medal awards and one portrait of his senior clients in particular placed 1st in the PPA NorthCentral District print competition and continued to become one of the top 10 illustrative images at the 2020 PPA Grand Imaging Awards in Atlanta, Georgia. After beginning his career as an arts and photography educator he quickly realized his love of working one-on-one with his subjects and synergistically creating a beautiful portrait experience for his clients. He works out of his downtown portrait studio in Rapid City, SD and also travels to many of the scenic locations in and around the Black Hills region of western South Dakota. His desire is to help guide his clients toward bringing their personality and individualized character to life through the photographic experience.
